Did you know that once you feel thirsty that you’re already dehydrated?
It’s recommended that we drink enough water so that we never reach the point of feeling thirsty. Our body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue and organ in our body needs water to work properly. Did you know that our body as a whole, including our organs, is made up of 70% water? It’s crucial that we stay hydrated so that our body is able to function properly and that we remain in overall good health.
Our body uses water to regulate our body temperature, keep joints lubricated, deliver nutrients to cells, remove waste, keep organs functioning properly, hydrate our skin, and aid in the digestive process. When we feel hungry between meals, we should drink water first, thirst is often confused with hunger. True hunger will not be satisfied by drinking water. If we don’t drink enough water our body will let us know it’s dehydrated. Some signs & symptoms of dehydration are dry skin, headaches, dizziness, dark yellow urine, constipation and cracked or dry lips. To prevent dehydration, it’s recommended that we drink half our body weight in ounces of water every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces of water every day.
Besides drinking water, eating fruits & vegetables is an easy way to add water to our diets. Many fruits and vegetables are more than 90 percent water by weight and can provide up to 20 percent of our water intake. Vegetables that are high in water content include lettuce, celery, bok choy, radishes, cucumber, zucchini, watercress, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and asparagus. Watermelon has the highest water content of fruits, but strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, pineapple, cranberries, oranges, and raspberries come in a close second. You can try offering these fruits and vegetables to your children throughout the day to help increase their water intake.
There are many simple ways to ensure that you and your family are getting plenty of fluids each day. To maintain hydration, you might want to incorporate a few of these ideas into your daily routine:
Drink a full glass of water as soon as you wake-up, before you get out of bed in the morning. Tip: Bring a full bottle of water to your bedroom and leave it on the floor or nightstand before going to bed.
